 How's your German? Minimize

For some unknown reason, we have to learn French and German terms as well as Italian. These are pretty rare in common repertoire, but even so ‘Massig’ is usually seen with the double ‘s’, not the strange German letter which we are not taught how to write properly.

The exercises devoted to labelling the music with the correct French or German term are very long and I feel are basically a waste of space... WE GET IT. Perhaps these long melodies could be used for other activities, like analysing key, form, adding dynamics, etc etc? Later on, there are shorter examples for the addition of terms such as ‘dolce’ and ‘tranquillo’, which is much better.

I must also point out the less-than-helpful German tutorial we get in lesson 6: ‘Lebhaft’ = lively or brisk,

‘Sehr lebhaft’ = very lively

‘Schnell’ = fast or quick

Ok... but on the next page, we’re tested on ‘very fast’ and ‘lively and fast’. Well, we’ve been taught ‘very’ and ‘lively’ and ‘fast’ , but we have not been taught ‘and’. (which I happened to remember is ‘und’ from my Year 8 German elective). I asked my sister-in-law, who speaks German, if ‘Lebhaft und Schnell’ would be the correct translation for this... she said that would be incorrect. I guess I shall have to wait and consult the teacher guide, but the point is THIS INFORMATION SHOULD BE READILY AVAILABLE IN THE WORKBOOKS.

So, can anyone help with this?

Should have read this more closely!
Today the man running the exams in Bathurst kindly allowed me to do all 10 exams. But I had not studied the Fourth Grade and certainly didn't know the German word!

Did you notice that the msuic being played did not always match up with the printed score?

On at least two occasions, the player missed an accidental.

Most interesting experience to do the whole set. And it was prompted by you saying you were doing them Samantha.

Thanks ... I think!

But it was a bit crook teaching for 3 and a half hours immediately after doing the exams all day!

We had an entire wrong CD for first grade! And i thought it was a bit mean testing the flute range (for the other students, not for me), when the woodwinds are on the first grade syllabus but ranges are not required. A detailed post of my experience in each grade will appear in the Forums section soon!

Wonderful Workshop
Your Townsville Workshop on 19/10/07 was amazing. Thankyou for your inspiration. I have been needing an injection of enthusiasm & creativity for my piano lessons. You have provided that, so now my students will benefit. I want to impart a true love of music in my students. You have shown fresh ways to make their lessons fun while learning heaps more than just notes on a page. Thankyou again for helping to make the music live! Rhonda Graffin, Townsville, QLD
