Changes to the Theory and Musicianship syllabuses

There have been a few changes to the Theory and Musicianship syllabuses, to take effect from the beginning of 2009.

The main change is the long-awaited changing of the set works and folk songs. These are listed at the beginning of the 2008 syllabus, and will soon appear as a download on the ‘free downloads’ page. The other changes are:

·         The deletion of pianoforte style from Grade 3 Theory; candidates will be required to write cadences in 4-part vocal (SATB ) style only

·         The deletion of pianoforte style from Grade 4 Musicianship; it is to be replaced with (SATB) style only.

These changes to the harmony section are excellent as pianoforte style is not particularly relevant to four-part writing. It also brings Grade 4 Musicianship more in line with the rest of the syllabus.

Now all we need is some uniformity with the Music Craft Syllabus and we will all be speaking the same language

Hi,

i have heard that the theory exams were different this year from previous years. I have two children doing Grade 5 theory who will sit the exam next year and they have been practicing with past papers, but we do not have a 2008 paper to see if it is different.

regards

The best thing is to get a copy of every possible past paper. The pattern of questioning may change at any time to keep students on their toes!

Great Presentations
The Bachelor of Music Education students at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium thoroughly enjoyed Samantha Coates' workshop on August 3rd, 2007. Her whole approach showed a well thought out structure and process which can produce musical results. Feedback from the students indicated that they were inspired by her enthusiasm and her practical approach which she demonstrated most effectively. Jenny Rosevear, Head Music Education, Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide.
